🚀Startups Nuts

Austin-based robot startup Diligent announced a $25M round led by Canaan. The company develops Moxi, a robot system designed to help healthcare providers with tasks such as carrying supplies. Diligent is expecting to have 100 Moxi robots in 22 hospital systems in the U.S. by the end of the year. Other participants in the round included True Ventures, Northwestern Medicine Innovation, Next Coast, and DNV Ventures.

Generative AI for learning startup, Gizmo, announced it raised a $3.5M Seed round. The company works on generating quizzes from notes saved in PDFs, PowerPoint presentations, YouTube videos, and other media. Gizmo uses learning streaks similar to the language learning app Duolingo. The app runs on a freemium model, with subscriptions to "get unlimited lives." The company claims over 300,000 users, increasing by 50% MoM "mainly through word of mouth." The round was led by NFX, Capital T, and Ada Ventures.

🏭Business Nuts

Apple signed a 10-year deal last fall to serve as MLS' primary broadcast partner. The deal is set to give Lionel Messi a percentage of the revenue generated from new subscriptions to MLS Season Pass. This was Apple's biggest move yet into the sports business. Apple is methodically working its way into deals with other leagues and broadcasters.

Cisco is acquiring cybersecurity firm Splunk for $157 per share in an all-cash deal. Cisco will finance the deal using a combination of cash and debt.The acquisition is by far Cisco’s largest ever and deepens the company’s bet on security software. Splunk’s technology helps businesses monitor and analyze their data to minimize the risk of hacks and resolve technical issues faster. Cisco has long been the world’s largest maker of computer networking equipment and has been bolstering its cybersecurity business to meet customer demands and fuel growth.

📱Tech Nuts

Microsoft held a special event in New York City on September 21. It announced new Surface hardware and detailed its vision for AI-powered features in its products at the event. Amazon is rumored to be working on a projector that can turn any surface into a screen. The device has many potential applications for Amazon's smart home ecosystem. Amazon is also working on technology to map homes. Its attempt to acquire iRobot for its home mapping technology has stalled due to regulatory scrutiny.
