Meta has decided to cancel its high-end mixed reality headset project, La Jolla, which was meant to compete with Apple's Vision Pro, despite earlier plans for a 2027 release. The La Jolla headset development reportedly stopped partly because of the high cost of MicroOLED displays, making it difficult to keep the device under the target price of $1,000. Although the La Jolla project is shelved, Meta continues to work on other headsets and mixed reality technologies, including a more affordable Quest headset and new AR glasses.

Boston Dynamics has introduced the latest version of its humanoid robot, Atlas, now fully electric and designed for real-world applications. This new iteration marks a significant leap forward in robotics, showcasing enhanced capabilities and a futuristic design.

Key Points:

Electric Power: Atlas now runs on electric motors, improving its performance, strength, and agility compared to its hydraulic predecessor.

Advanced Capabilities: The robot features superior strength and a broader range of motion, making it suitable for more complex tasks across various industries.

Futuristic Design: With multi-jointed legs and arms and a large camera-like lens for an eye, the electric Atlas embodies a sci-fi aesthetic.

Vision for the Future: As humanoid robots like Atlas evolve, they edge us closer to a future where such robots could take over tasks traditionally performed by humans.

In a recent demonstration video, Atlas showcased its impressive strength by performing push-ups. While this display may not directly translate to real-world applications, it highlights the robot's robust actuators and the potential for advanced human-like movements, underscoring the ongoing advancements in robotics technology.

Former OpenAI employees have criticized CEO Sam Altman for opposing California's AI regulation bill, SB 1047, despite previously supporting the idea of AI regulation. The former employees argue that OpenAI's resistance to the "light-touch" requirements of SB 1047 undermines the company's commitment to AI safety. The critics also believe that OpenAI's demands for employees to waive whistleblower rights are contradictory to its public stance on AI safety and transparency.
