Healthcare is 20% of the US economy, but the industry has been slow to adopt technology. With AI, healthtech companies no longer need to fight the uphill battle of training people on software. Instead, they can sell AI that acts like a person and takes more and more of the work off healthcare professionals’ plates, enabling them to work on more interesting problems and practice at the top of their licenses.
While BYJU’S said the talks for the loan amendment are progressing in the right direction, the two parties are yet to put pen to paper. The steering committee (SteerCo) of the ad hoc lenders, who collectively own 85% of term loan B, had committed to an August 3 timeline. The term loan B, taken out by BYJU’S in November 2021, has been shrouded in controversy since last December.
🏭Business Nuts
X is looking to build a trading hub inside its app. The company sent a request for plans to large data providers in recent weeks seeking proposals for financial content, real-time stock data, and other features. X is offering data companies the ability to reach hundreds of millions of highly-qualified users. The offer did not mention compensation. X's request asked companies to send in bids, but is unclear if any firms replied.
Apple launched a savings account in partnership with Goldman in April 2023, and it’s already reached $10B in deposits. This showcases the power of brand trust, distribution, and ease-of-use in gaining critical mass with new ventures.
📱Tech Nuts
Apple plans to announce its iPhone 15 lineup in the third week of September. Mobile carriers have been asking employees not to take the 15th of September off due to a major smartphone announcement. If Apple announces the new lineup on September 13, pre-orders will likely begin on September 15, and the official launch will take place on September 22. iPhone sales have been delayed in the past due to supply issues which may happen again this year.
Rather than creating new and useful things, older companies tend to become less innovative and start litigating. This tactic allows them to extract more value while simultaneously suppressing new competitors. Google has clearly reached that stage in some aspects of its business. It is meddling with the Web Environment Integrity system by allowing websites to determine which browsers to serve. This move will ultimately enable Google to effectively block ad-blocking while also eroding the principles of the open web, which Google used to be at the forefront of fighting for.
🎁Miscellaneous
Scientists in Japan have developed a vaccine that can delay the progression of Alzheimer's disease. It appears to reduce inflammation and improve other important biomarkers in the brains of mice with Alzheimer's-like illness. The vaccine is supposed to work by training the immune system to go after senescent cells that produce high levels of a particular protein. Its effectiveness has yet to be formally peer-reviewed and there are still many steps to take before the team even begins thinking about large-scale human trials.
