🏭Business Nuts 

  • Hertz and CEO Stephen Scherr are parting ways. Scherr led the car rental giant out of bankruptcy, buying ~165k EVs for its splashy comeback — which consumers weren’t at all interested in. Hertz recently took a $245m hit selling off 20k of those EVs.

  • LinkedIn is getting games. While there’s no launch date yet, the networking platform is developing puzzle-based games. Not the most natural pairing, but it makes sense given that parent Microsoft earned $7.1B in gaming revenue last quarter.

  • Dune: Part Two is the highest-grossing film of 2024 so far with $500m in global box office revenue. Dune (2021), released simultaneously in theaters and on HBO Max, grossed $433m.

  • Super Micro Computer, once a low-profile server manufacturer, has experienced a remarkable surge, eclipsing Nvidia ($NVDA) with a twelvefold increase in share price over the past year. Set to join the S&P 500, Supermicro's strategic focus on AI server production, leveraging Nvidia chips, has positioned it as a pivotal player in the AI revolution.

  • Binance CEO Richard Teng anticipates Bitcoin to surge past $80,000, fueled by growing institutional investment into crypto-backed ETFs. The introduction of Bitcoin ETFs in the US has initiated a new wave of institutional funds into the market, signaling just the beginning of a significant uptrend, according to Teng.

📱Tech Nuts

xAI has released the weights and architecture for Grok-1. Grok-1 is a Mixture-of-Experts model with 314 billion parameters. The released model is a raw base model checkpoint from the Grok-1 pretraining phase, which means that it is not fine-tuned for any specific application. It was trained from scratch by xAI using a custom training stack.

Tarsus Pharmaceuticals is developing a pill that could provide protection against Lyme disease for several weeks at a time. An early-stage trial has shown that it can kill ticks on people for up to 30 days after 24 hours of ingestion. The drug only kills the ticks, rather than the bacteria that causes Lyme disease. It may also protect against other tick-borne diseases.
